Eleonore Sophia Westenholz

1759 - 1838

This German composer, singer, and pianist first studied with the Schwerin court composer J.W. Hertel. With a career as both a singer and a piano virtuoso, Westenholz enjoyed great success in Germany. She married and gave birth to eight children. After her retirement in 1821, Westenholz performed her own music for the court. The most noteworthy of her compositions are strophic songs in folksong style and through-composed bravura works. For further information, see "Women Composers: Music Through the Ages," volume IV.
