Following studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, Elaine Bearer returned to the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Ludmila Ulehla and Mario Davidovsky, earning a Bachelor of Music in 1970. After graduate work at NYU, she taught at Lone Mountain College, San Francisco State University, and San Francisco Conservatory. Bearer earned an MD/Ph.D. in 1983 from UCSF. She is currently on the faculty of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she runs a scientific research lab studying the nervous system. She holds faculty appointments at Brown in both Medical Sciences and Music. Bearer's music is performed regularly throughout the United States.
