Sophie Mercken
1776 - 1821
Sophie Mercken was the eldest of three daughters born to Johann Kilian Mercken, considered to have been the first maker of pianos in Paris. Her set of Six Romances for voice and accompaniment is her only known publication. Sophie married Casimir Hartmann, a teacher of music, and apparently she was also a music teacher herself; among her piano pupils were the daughter of a notary and the women at the "maison d'education" of Grandchamps at Versailles.
